Bordetellosis

Bordetellosis, a disease caused by a bacterium very close to the causative agent of whooping cough in humans, Bordetella bronchiseptica.

Morbidity is directly related to the conditions of detention

The source of infection is sick animals and carriers with secondary immunodeficiency, often against the background of active herpesvirus and/or calicivirus infection

Pathogenesis: inhibition of the function of the ciliated epithelium of the respiratory tract and local immunity factors; production of exotoxins A and B, which increase the level of prostaglandins and Ig E. The result is sensitization and the development of inflammation with features of bronchitis with an asthmatic component.

Incubation period of 10 days (Wednesday)

Colostral immunity is effective for only 2 weeks.

Severe course is more common in pregnant women and kittens up to 12 weeks, possible pneumonia, respiratory failure.

All cats with a cough are considered infected.

Diagnostics: Bacteriological (examination of oropharyngeal smear, transnasal/bronchoalveolar flushes), 10-90% informative.

PCR (100% informative).

Serological (determination of antibodies), has no significance, because it is believed that up to 100% of cats have encountered the pathogen. According to the research of the WSAVA group (2015), all kittens older than 16 weeks have already been in contact with the pathogen.

The drug of choice is Doxycycline, its better soluble form is Unidox Solutab or veterinary Ronaxan at a dose of 10 mg per 1 kg of animal weight. The course of treatment is 5-10 days. It is possible to use Enrofloxacin (Enrosept, Baitril) at a dosage of 0.1-0.2 ml per kilogram of cat weight strictly for 5 days (there is a possibility of developing aseptic necrosis). Enrofloxacin is the drug of choice in the treatment of pneumonia in kittens, as it is also effective in pseudomonosis, plus tetracycline drugs are not allowed for babies, the course of therapy in this case is 10-14 days.

Clarithromycin (klacid, fromilid uno) 1/3 t (500mg) 1 time a day for 10-14 days can also be used in treatment, has a very wide spectrum of action.

Specific prevention: Nobivac Bb. Cats from the age of 4 weeks are subject to vaccination. The vaccine is administered to animals once intranasally. It is forbidden to vaccinate clinically ill, infected with helminths and/or weakened animals receiving antibiotics or intranasal drops. Causes the formation of an immune response 72 hours after a single injection lasting at least 12 months. (from the instructions). It is advisable to vaccinate all susceptible animals kept in the same room at the same time. Revaccination is recommended once a year, but intense immunity usually lasts no more than six months.

As any vaccination against bacterial infections is ineffective, in addition, we remember that the incidence directly depends on the conditions of detention and all kittens older than 16 weeks are infected. Therefore, the main prevention: competent breeding work and ensuring good conditions of detention. Vaccination can be recommended to kittens and contacts for the prevention of an epidemic in the nursery, in case of a confirmed diagnosis in one of the adult animals. Mass vaccination is not recommended.
